I just got a call from my little brother's now ex girlfriend. She and I were matey while they were dating, and she wanted to explain to me why it hadn't worked out. Fair enough. But apparently the reason is...

She didn't want to date "a retard" anymore.

Okay...

My brother is not "retarded" by any sense of the word. He started university at 14 and he has a number of impressive graduate and post-grad degrees. He's a hugely respected theoretical scientist, for god's sake!

What he is, is autistic. Which she knew when they started dating. It's not like he suddenly "became" autistic. He's been up front and honest with her from the beginning, got her literature to read on his condition, found support groups online for her, and really TRIED to engage with her on a lot of levels, which is unbelievably hard for someone with autism to do.

Now, I'm not saying he's a walk in the park, by any means. And if it all got to be too much for her, well, okay. I imagine the relationship was a difficult one and I wouldn't want to date someone as single-minded and quirky as him either.

But to use the word "retard" so casually is so demeaning and wrong, especially coming from someone our whole family embraced and trusted. I'm genuinely hurt by this, and I think it's safe to say this friendship is OVER.

Here's a question...

Is Cormac actually a name, or did JKR make it up?

We're totally stymied on a name for a boy, and the more I think about it the more "Cormac" begins to sound really, really GOOD.

Cormac Matthew Singer. That's really quite nice, isn't it?

But if it's not a real name I won't subject a kid to it.

I love living overseas. It's the life I chose and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Still, I've got a case of the November blues, so I'm ruminating on the stuff I'd like to import.

The top ten list (in no particular order) is as follows:

1) BOOKS! God, do I miss having a ready supply of English language books. Yes, I know I can order online and even read books online, but I miss spending hours browsing in a bookstore and finding little unexpected treats. I miss the smell of bookstores. Ditto libraries.

2) Chocolate M&Ms. Why can I get peanut and almond and disgusting little crunch varieties, but no plain???

3) Dominos. I know it's crappy, greasy pizza, but I MISS IT. The bacon and cheddar one with the beef especially...

4) Being able to read movie listings. My approach now is just to turn up and hope something I want to see is playing soon. If not, I go shopping. And honestly, I hate shopping.

5) Clothes that fit. I'm 5'11". I have to wear Japanese men's clothes! Ditto shoes.

6) Knowing how to behave. Culture MATTERS. I'm still learning how to enter and leave a room appropriately. I'm learning how to get ready at the public baths. I'm learning how to interact with my children in public so people don't worry about them (the Japanese generally don't kiss their babies). They're small things, but they add up.

7) My two best friends from university. They're still living together and taking holidays together. I don't envy them their rut, but I miss that closeness.

8) Being able to return stuff. DON'T EVEN TRY THAT HERE. The language barrier alone is a killer, and I get the impression it's just not done.

9) Not being stared at. I'm a total freak when I get off base. People stare. They point. Complete strangers come up and say hello. It's both charming and offputting.

10) Stable ground beneath my feet. Literally. We've had four earthquakes in the last 10 months. Nothing too bad, and the tremors are exciting to be sure, but the threat of a big one is scary.

So we've got three weeks at the end of December - beginning of January, and I'm sorely tempted to get out of snowy Hokkaido and go somewhere warm.

I'm thinking fly into Vietnam (Hanoi), a boat ride through Haplong Bay, check out the French district, then head to Cambodia for a few days and tour Ankor Wat. From Cambodia, fly into Seoul for a couple of days just to catch up with old friends and show off the girls before we go home.

Korea is a no-brainer. I've lived there and I know the language/culture. As for Cambodia and Vietnam, anyone ever been? I'd love to know how doable this is with a couple of wee ones in tow. Are there any maor sights in the area that I'm leaving out that I should see?

Help me plan my holiday the lazy way!

I think I've finally cracked a fest assignment that has been giving me loads of grief. The idea came tonight, and now I've gone from being utterly blocked to having two chapters on the page.

I was a bit freaked out at first, as it's a smut-free request, but I think I've found my angle on this one. It's going to be the fic where NO ONE hooks up. The anti-OTP opus. It's long overdue.

It kind of seems like in the fic world, having a crush on someone entitles you to them. Sirius wants Remus and Remus is straight? No problem; he just loves Sirius that much! Hermione wants Draco even thought he's a death eater with a serious pureblood prejudice and he fucking HATES her? He'll change! After all, she LIKES him!!!

I blame JKR for this, actually. Having virtually all of her main characters marry their first serious relationship (Draco and Pansy are the exception) has led to this and it's ANNOYING me.

So, in this particular fic, crushes go unrequited. It hurts, then people get over it.

Yeah, I'm anticipating all of one comment and a seriously disappointed recipient.

I've met someone else.

His name is Merlin, and he's on the BBC and he comes with really hot boys doing the slashy subtext thing, plus dragons and Anthony Stewart Head, and magic and forbidden romance and stuff and--

I think this might be serious. I still want to see you and everything, but I have a feeling you might not be number one anymore.

First of all, a quick thanks to all the lovely people who sent PMs asking if we were all right. Some of you, I know, are pretty anti-military, so it was really nice of you to put politics aside and make that gesture.

Short answer, yes. Although we're close to quite a few people stationed in Texas, no one we know was hurt or otherwise involved in the shooting tragedy.

Long answer, kind of. Something like this hits close to home even when you're far from home. I consider everyone in uniform to be family, including those I haven't met. So my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by what happened yesterday.

Other than that, I really can't comment on it. I understand people are curious, but I'm in Japan and far away from everything. I really don't have any information aside from a few phone calls from friends, which are private and off the record, and what's in the news, which everyone knows anyway. I'd hate for anything I said to be misconstrued when the topic is so sensitive.

I'm just gonna hug my kids extra hard tonight and be grateful for what I have.

I just bought a rabbit. I don't know why. It's cute and fluffy and everything, but I have no particular interest in rabbits and I don't understand why this one called out to me.

But now I own it, so will try to do right by it. Anyone know anything about rabbit ownership? All the books about them in the pet shop were in Japanese.

And any ideas for names? It's white with black ears and looks like a rabbit, if that helps.

How do I explain this to my husband?

EDIT: OMG!!! I can feed it what's left of the radishes!

You know when you have a shit day and only even bother to check your comms because one of your favourite people in the whole wide internet is the mod? And then something really good happens that makes you feel all warm and fuzztastic? Yeah...

You know what I'd forgotten about being pregnant? It makes me want to have sex. With anyone. Hell, with anyTHING. There's absolutely no logic behind this so far as I can tell; if anything biology should totally nullify my sex drive now since it can't serve any reproductive function. But OH MY GOD. The cucumbers at the grocery store got me all worked up today. My boss touched my shoulder and I almost melted.

I've got to tell you, I don't know how ladies who are pregnant and not in relationships manage it!

Now that Halloween is over, I'm bracing myself for the annual holiday farce (it made it's first return today). It goes something like this:

Person: What are you doing for Christmas this year.
Tania: Oh, nothing. We don't celebrate Christmas.
P: Why not?
T: We're Jewish.
P: (in a voice that suggests my puppy just died): Oooohhh. That's okay. At least you have Hannukah. Eight days of gifts, right?

OR

P: Why don't you celebrate anyway? It's not really about religion, it's about family.

First:
Hannukah is not the Jewish equivilant of Christmas. It just happens to fall around the same time, that's all. It's actually a very minor holiday that's been blown out of proportion by all the Seasons Greetings stuff. Our major holidays are the High Holy Days that take place in the fall.

Second: I've never got eight days of gifts, and I don't know any Jewish kid who ever has. Maybe it happens, but that's not the standard. We exhange gifts within our family on the first day. At home, we exchange gifts with my parents on one day and my husbands' parents on another. I don't know how this eight days thing got started, really. And it pisses me off when people argue with me about it. Dude, it's my faith. I know what I do.

Third: I'm calling a halt to the pity stuff. I don't need to be consoled for my religion. I don't need or want Christmas. I'm proud of who I am and to assume otherwise smacks of condescension.

Fourth: Sure. It's about family. And my family doesn't celebrate Christmas. What should I do, make a turkey and insist that we bond over how the whole thing has no relevance to us?

I wish absolutely everyone who celebrates Christmas a very happy one. If someone wishes me a merry Christmas, I'll do the same in return. I'll try not to bitch too much about the commercials, the Tim Allan movies, the holiday specials, the nonstop Christmas songs on the radio and so on. In exchange, let's never have the above conversation again. Instead, just say, "Oh, I didn't know that." and then tell me about your holiday plans.
